Before I get to the articles, I want to let everyone know I will be attending the NY Islanders first Booster Club meeting for 2008-2009. The first guest will be Scott Gordon. If anyone has any questions they want me to ask him, post it in a comment. and I will do my to get an answer.

A Little Roster Speculation and a Question

NYI Fan Central's picture

As I wrote the other day I feel like we are back in the summer wondering how someone out of Blake Comeau, Sean Bergenheim or Jeff Tambellini could play on a fourth line and be effective if Jon Sim is not in that spot?

We did our poll back then, huge response where everyone seemed to go all over the board as to who will in effect be the odd man out on a fourth line, regardless of how we speculate how much that line could play.

Newsday: Greg Logan has Rick DiPietro's comments about how more important than the result Monday was that he is healthy as he discussed playing last season with injury and talked about his stick-handling abilities.

A Statement on Coverage and a Deleted Blog

NYI Fan Central's picture

I'm going to be direct with my readers here, I kind of held back on Tuesday for one of the rare times since I started writing this blog and I regret doing so.

I would like to take a blog entry here and explain why.

I made a quick little note in the articles Tuesday about Newsday not even giving us an AP article for Monday's game and had a few words on it because I had never seen that before in our clubs reporting.

I wrote up a big long blog unloading on Newsday that I deleted/before editing it down to what you read in the Tuesday articles.

Final Poll Results

NYI Fan Central's picture

What I can write other than to thank everyone for a great job on the first complete poll in quite a while and our first triple digit response (I think 144 folks perticipated) as I did extend things to the day the team announced their roster cuts.

This poll put you in Garth Snow and Scott Gordon place asking you to make the roster cuts.

Here were the final results:

Joey MacDonald 30 (20%)
Yann Danis 36 (25%)
Frans Nielsen 57 (39%)
Andy Hilbert 87 (60%)
Jeremy Colliton 37 (25%)
Tim Jackman 97 (67%)

Isles Release Roster, Opening Night Friday

TheDriveForFive's picture

Well, here it is, courtesy of the team’s official website:

Well, now that that’s out of the way, here are my thoughts:

Anyone that doesn’t like that first round pick Josh Bailey ended up making the team is out of their minds. Sure, the Islanders have a host of veterans on the team this season, but with Bailey’s cup of coffee this season, combined with getting to see Kyle Okposo, Jeff Tambellini, Sean Bergenheim, Blake Comeau and possibly even Jack Hillen develop, this team has the potential of being very fun to watch.

New York Announces it's 2008-09 Roster

NYI Fan Central's picture

Islanders website: Announced the 2008-09 roster that will begin the season in New York which will include Josh Bailey at the start.

Sillinger, Campoli, Sutton start on injured reserve.

If you had Skinner on your list to stay for now, you win the poll. MacDonald wins the backup spot to start. Welcome to the NHL Jack Hillen for now.

Roster Trimmed, Bailey Gets Extended Look

Islesblogger's picture

According to Greg Logan over at Newsday and the Islanders Official Release today, the team has trimmed their roster down to 23-players by assigning several players to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL. This isn’t surprising as the NHL deadline for rosters is tomorrow (Wednesday 10/8). The part that is surprising to many is how 2008 1st round draft pick Josh Bailey remains with the team.

Seems a good news/I'm not completely sure situation regarding listening to the Islanders game against Florida tonight at 7:30pm but I think we can listen live to this game.

I will put up a special link to listen live, hopefully it works.

790 the ticket covers the Panthers on radio. This station seems to pick and choose what programming they go live with from it's website but the Florida Panthers radio station is advertising broadcasting this game live beginning with it's pregame at
7pm here for a 7:30 start.

Islander News Articles 10/6

NYI Fan Central's picture

NY Times: Matt Higgins has the story of Brandon Sudgen's release from the Islanders with his story and comments along with those of Brendan Witt.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I think the bigger shock was the Times doing anything New York Islander releated in it's print edition if they cannot be bothered to cover the new coach being hired.

Prospects Stats through 10/4/2008

growingupwiththeisles's picture

Because the first stat update is all-inclusive from the start of the season, a short article listing will be posted tomorrow. Beginning next Sunday, article links will be included in the stat update post.

Due to the width of the columns, the stats MAY NOT be able to be listed on a single line. The stats for all skaters (Forwards and Defensemen) are listed in order as follows: Games Played (GP), Goals (G), Assists (A), Points (P), Plus/Minus (+/-) and Penalties in Minutes (PIM). The stats for Goaltenders are listed in order as follows: Games Played (GP), Goals Against (GA), Goals Against Average (GAA), Shots (Shts), Save Percentage (S%), Win/Loss Record (Record). This should help you read the stats correctly.

Newsday = Wow

TheDriveForFive's picture

I didn’t know who Johnette Howard was before 9:45 P.M. Sunday night, but I won’ forget her name anytime soon. You see, some people think Newsday gos out of it’s way to write “fluffy” pieces on the Islanders. Pieces that make them look better than a team that in all honesty, isn’t enjoying the same amount of success they have been in years past.

I don’t think anyone will ever think that way ever again after this piece.

Quick Sunday Notables

NYI Fan Central's picture

Newsday: Greg Logan reports in the Islanders Newsday blog first round pick Josh Bailey will travel to Florida but is not expected to play as head coach Scott Gordon comments on this while the beat writer goes back to the third period against New Jersey where the club was badly out shot but the Islander coach liked where his team generated it's chances from.

NYI Fan Central Comments:

Some Roster Speculation

NYI Fan Central's picture

One more preseason game on Monday, at this point unless Scott Gordon is playing for no injuries Monday in Florida we should see something close to his opening night lineup outside of perhaps giving Martinek-Witt another game off so that key pairing start the season healthy.

Fair to write it looks like we could have a few set lines on paper given the preseason so I'll do a little speculation.

Birthday Boy Bailey Buys Into Isles Future, DP Ready Tomorrow?

TheDriveForFive's picture

The Islanders took a huge step in their “youth movement” this week, signing 2008 first round pick Josh Bailey to a three-year, entry level contract. Considering the fact that Mike Sillinger is still dealing with injuries and may not be on the ice opening night, there’s a huge chance he could make the team’s opening night roster.

The only question is how effective can he be?
