2014 NHL Playoffs Preview: Blue Jackets vs Penguins

Islanders Insight's picture

The Columbus Blue Jackets will get a warm welcome to the NHL’s Eastern Conference as they face the Pittsburgh Penguins for the first time during the quarterfinal round of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs. There certainly isn’t a rivarly between the Blue Jackets and Penguins, but with only three hours separating the two cities, fans from both cities will be filling any seats they can in enemy territory.

It’s an all-Central Division matchup between two of the best teams in the Western Conference and, for that matter, the entire League when the St. Louis Blues play host to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Capuano Stays Around For Another Year

Islanders Insight's picture

Garth Snow has told Newsday that head coach Jack Capuano will be back next season. Capuano lead the Islanders to a disappointing 34-37-11 record this season, which placed the Islanders 14th in the Eastern Conference and 26th in the entire league. Capuano has been the Head Coach of the Islanders for four years and has […]

New York Islanders Outlast Buffalo Sabres in Final Game Of Season

Islanders Insight's picture

The New York Islanders’ 2013-14 season ended on a positive note Sunday night as the team came away from First Niagara Center with a 4-3 shootout win over fellow Eastern Conference basement-dwellers, the Buffalo Sabres.

Sure, the Sabres played like a team with nothing to lose. And sure, they dominated the Islanders for long stretches of the first two periods. But hey, what’s a more fitting end to a season like the one we just saw on Long Island than watching the Isles get outplayed, catch a few lucky bounces, and score a timely goal en route to a road victory?

Nothing. There is no end to the season more fitting than that, because Islanders.

Stanley Cup Playoffs Round 1 Viewing Guide

Islanders Insight's picture

It is time. There is no better month to be a hockey fan, whether your team made the post-season or not.

If you know anyone on the fence about following the greatest sport in the world (ok, that’s just my opinion), get them on board. Once they get a taste of playoff hockey, they will never turn away again. It’s just that damn good.

Speed, skill, intensity, physicality, emotion – it is all on display ten fold from 46 players each and every night who get to suit up and battle for the greatest trophy in professional sports (many share than opinion by the way).

And so it ends.

The 2013-14 regular season has come to a close. The Stanley Cup Playoffs begin on Wednesday, but the focus for Long Island fans is set on tomorrow.

On Tuesday night, the New York Islanders (26th place), along with the other 13 non-playoff teams, will participate in the NHL’s Draft Lottery. Unlike past years, however, all fourteen teams entered can be awarded the first-overall pick.

It all started innocently enough back at Barclays Center in Brooklyn when the grass was still green and temperatures still warm. It will all end tonight in cold Buffalo as the Islanders close out their 2013-14 season against the Buffalo Sabres. If you care to tune in, its a 5pm EST start.

Ryan Pulock, his junior season now over after his team was eliminated in the playoffs, will head to Bridgeport for the final four games of the American Hockey League season after yesterday’s game was postponed due to poor ice conditions at Webster Bank Arena. Must have been some rave the night before to melt the ice surface to the point where they could not get it ready for a 7pm start.

And then there was one. One game remaining in the 2013-14 regular season for the New York Islanders after last night’s 3-2 shootout victory over the New Jersey Devils in Newark.

The kids continue to get tons of ice time and produce as they try to impress the coaching staff prior to Monday’s break-up day when everyone goes their separate ways to begin their off-season training regimens after a little vacation to sooth the body and mind.

Is there any doubt that Evgeni Nabokov should be back next season?

Nabokov, the New York Islanders’ starting goaltender since the middle of the 2011-12 season, made 19 saves to earn his fourth shutout of the 2013-14 season last night in Montreal. While the 38-year-old goalie has certainly slowed down since his days in San Jose, Nabby has demonstrated his ability to “get it done” throughout his tenure on Long Island.

Islanders Bring Up Justin Johnson

Islanders Insight's picture

The New York Islanders have called up forward Justin Johnson from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the team’s minor league affiliate, on an emergency basis the team announced today. Johnson 32, was an undrafted free agent who played three years with the the Manchester Monarchs, the Los Angeles Kings’ minor league team before signing a two-way deal […]

Islanders : Sundstrom Down, Who’s Left?

Islanders Insight's picture

And another one bites the dust for the Islanders. With an injury list that seems almost as long as the roster sheet that head coach Jack Capuano has to fill out for the National Hockey League on every game night, New York lost another forward last night, Johan Sundstrom to the hit shown on the video above.

What that means is that another rookie is set to make his National Hockey League debut tonight in Newark against the Devils.

Today, it was announced that forward Justin Johnson was recalled from Bridgeport on a ‘emergency’ basis to take Sundstrom’s roster spot.

Another game, another injury.

All went well as far as the score went in last night’s game for the Islanders, a 2-0 win against the Montreal Canadiens, but the team suffered yet another injury. Johan Sundstrom suffered an injury after taking a vicious hit in the 2nd period of last night’s contest. Sundstrom would leave the game, and his status is currently unknown.

I should stop writing these Top Shelf posts because every time I’m on deck for one—and I actually get around to writing it—another New York Islanders player goes down with an injury. This time, it was Cal Clutterbuck who left a game and did not return.

I blame myself.

Islanders Get Clutterbucked In Loss To Sens

Islanders Insight's picture

For the 4th straight year, the New York Islanders will finish the season with a below .500 home record. For all the undoing the latest November and December swoon did in making the team miss the post-season dance once again, that might be the most damaging.

After last night’s 4-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators in the home finale of the 2013-14 season, players seemed to be at a loss to explain why.
