Farewell to the Nassau Coliseum: Day 42

Atlanta Thrashers v New York Islanders

Sure, the ups and downs of the standings might be frustrating for some to see their arch-rivals at the top with them during such an exceptional season so far, but who would have thought in August of 2014 that the Islanders would be at this point almost 60 games into the season?

While I could have done something clever by tying in Brooklyn and Jackie Robinson (a childhood hero of mine) with the Islanders, we’ll let those that filled the Coliseum with memories, albeit short sometimes, headline this countdown.

So with 42 days to go, we take a look at a pesky player who was an Islander for just 78 games and tallied 42 assists in his time at the Nassau Coliseum.

It’s always somewhat entertaining to see the faces of people when I mention the name Mathieu Schneider. Most of their faces contort in a look of disgust, as many remember him as a Ranger in the late ’90s or a Red Wing towards the end of his career. Then again, he’s played for so many teams it’s really up to you.

Schneider was drafted in the third round of the 1987 draft and spent six and a half seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. In his 21-year career, he scored 20 goals just once, his sixth season with Montreal.

In 1995 he was dealt to the Islanders as a part of the blockbuster move that sent Pierre Turgeon to Montreal.

In 13 games to finish out the 1994-95 season, he recorded three goals and six assists. In 65 games the next season, he put up 13 goals and 36 assists before he was on the move again.

In March of 1996, he was traded to Toronto with Wendel Clark and D.J. Smith for Darby Hendrickson, Sean Haggerty, Kenny Jonsson and Toronto’s 1st round choice (Roberto Luongo) in the 1997 draft.

For the next 13 seasons, he would make stops with the Rangers, Kings, Red Wings, Ducks, Thrashers, Canadiens, Canucks  and Coyotes before retiring in 2010.

In 1,289 games he recorded 223 goals and 520 assists, 14 and 42 coming as an Islander.
