Detroit Red Wings v New York Islanders

The New York Islanders will host the Detroit Red Wings at 1PM this afternoon at the Barclays Center. Both teams are part of what’s become a jam packed race for the eight playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. The Rangers victory over the Philadelphia Flyers last night did help give the Blueshirts a little separation, but there is still only seven points separating the third place team from the ninth place team in the Conference.

The Islanders have games in hand over everyone involved in the race besides the Pittsburgh Penguins, but a win today could put them back in third place in the Metropolitan Division, ahead of the New Jersey Devils who shutout the Los Angeles Kings, 1-0, last night.

The Islanders had the day off yesterday and hopefully had enough time to forget about what was perhaps their worst loss of the season on Saturday night to the Carolina Hurricanes. The Isles surrendered six goals in the losing effort, while the Red Wings, in contrast, are coming off a victory yesterday that was highlighted by six goals from their offense against the Boston Bruins.

If you’re looking for a little optimism after the disappointing loss on Saturday night, here’s some food for thought as you get ready for today’s action; the Islanders are the well-rested team, they are 18-8-3 at home, Thomas Greiss should be in goal, six goals allowed by the Isles is a little “flukey”, as is six goals scored by the Red Wings and John Tavares remains hot. I hope I didn’t just jinx anything.

Our pregame will be posting shortly.
