The New York Islanders flexed some muscle in the first five minutes of their game Tuesday evening against the San Jose Sharks, tallying twice on markers from John Tavares and Mikhail Grabovski before holding on and earning a 4-2 win.

After 10 of their first 15 games were played at home, the Islanders might have needed a galvanizing road trip and it certainly got off to a good start. It continues this evening in Los Angeles and will wrap up tomorrow when the Islanders take on the struggling Anaheim Ducks.

Desperate for offense, you have to like how New York responded, especially in the early stages. Come the second period, the Sharks really brought the attack and kept the Islanders on their heels. But Thomas Greiss continues to give the team what they so sorely lacked in years past; capable backup goaltending. A timely mistake in the third by Sharks goaltender Alex Stalock gave New York the victory.

Can they seize that momentum and ride with it into Staples Center tonight, where they will take on a team that has been to the dance and won it all recently? A team with one of the best goaltenders in the entire league and a team that is just now starting to peak, even without the services of Marian Gaborik, who has just one goal in 15 games?

Time will tell…Well, the team will tell us, but you get the point.
