“First Place Islanders” has a pretty nice ring to it…

It wasn’t pretty and it didn’t come without nerves, but the New York Islanders defeated the Ottawa Senators 2-1 last night and took sole possession of first place in the Metropolitan Division. The Isles have not been atop their division in the month of December since 2008, so it truly is an exciting time to be a fan of this team.

In last night’s win, Jaroslav Halak also set the Islanders’ record for most consecutive wins by a goaltender with 11. He breaks Billy Smith‘s long-standing record of 10, which he set back in 1982. It seems like GM Garth Snow made the right decision in May to go after the 29-year-old of all the available goaltenders, as his play has helped the team reach a league-high 19 wins.

There’s really not that much that needs to be said; this team is a threat. Despite the injuries that have been present throughout the season, they have been able to pile up wins in impressive fashion. Even if it’s been rather sloppy the last few games, two points are two points in the standings. The Islanders will be healthy soon enough, and when they are, I have two words for you:

Watch out.
