Reminder: If you are using #Isles and tweeting good stuff about the Boys of Long Island-Brooklyn, we’ll be watching you.

Neither the presence of Johnny Boychuk, nor Travis Hamonic were required for a nearly-perfect 2-0-1 week for the Islanders of Brooklyn homestanding.

While John Tavares hasn’t scored a goal in six games, victories over the Blue Jackets and Rangers saw the Isles regain some of their scoring touch, namely Brock Nelson via his first NHL hat trick.

The Islanders are really weathering the turn of the calendar into the new year so far rather than thriving if you look at their inconsistency of scoring. When you subtract this month’s two high-scoring wins against then-slumping Dallas and a last place Columbus team, the Isles haven’t scored more than three goals in a game, and have nearly been shut out nearly twice, including Sunday’s shootout loss to Vancouver that was tied late by Ryan Strome. That is seven goals in five games, including an empty-netter. Probably need more goals.

While it’s hard to argue with a second-place Metro spot, well behind the dominant Capitals, and 24-15-6 mark that is good for seventh-best in the NHL, imagine how this team would be doing with a Tavares producing closer to his career average. Or, perhaps what if they made a dramatic move to improve as the New York Post’s Larry Brooks asserted.

Would Garth Snow give up a prized prospect? Can Tavares get hot and propel the Isles at the right time? Will Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen remain Islanders? Will the Barclays Center continue to fill up into Spring? Is right now the Big Casino for this franchise?

Tune in for the next few months. Same #Isles time, same #Isles channel…
