The Evolution of Casey Cizikas

Nobody could ever make the assumption that being a professional athlete is easy. And that notion is especially true in the world of hockey.

The road from lacing up your first pair of skates and heading out to the local pond to play some pick-up with your friends to the National Hockey League, the journey is filled with ups and downs, peaks and valleys, and many people contribute along the way to any success that is found.

The New York Islanders traveled to Nashville last night to take on the Predators in their second preseason game of the 2013-14 season in as many nights.

Results were not what the team or head coach Jack Capuano were looking for, as the ‘B’ team dropped a 2-0 decision to the Predators and in the process have now gone 120 minutes without scoring a goal.

Five years ago, it was difficult for New York Islanders fans to remain hopeful about the future of their team. The organization effectively blew up its structure—and its overall philosophy—when it announced it would embark on a full-scale, scorched-earth, tear-it-all-down rebuild after the 2008-09 season.

Is New Necessarily Better For Islanders Fans At The Barclays Center?

Joe Pantorno- Eyes on Isles

There were plenty of Islanders fans going into Saturday night’s preseason game against the Devils at the Barclays Center with plenty of mixed emotions. A legion of fans practically grew up in the Nassau Coliseum.

That is home. So of course an Islanders home game anywhere else, especially in Brooklyn, was set to provide a bit of culture shock.

The Devils and Islanders play in the 2013-14 NHL preseason for the 2nd time in 3 days as they officially anoint Barclays Center as a hockey facility tonight with faceoff scheduled for 7pm EST.

Almost 10,000 fans and likely more are expected to pack the beautiful Brooklyn facility and after attending media day two weeks ago, I can assure you they will not leave disappointed.

IMG_0750Tonight marks the unveiling of Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York as a hockey venue as the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders square off in NHL preseason action for the second time in three days.

After the Islanders 5-3 victory at the Prudential Center on Thursday, the team was back on the ice yesterday at Nassau Coliseum, once again split into two groups. After session A left the ice, head coach Jack Capuano addressed the media.

We are going to decide today who will play in goal but I think whoever plays will get most of the playing time, whoever that might be. Could be Nabby.

New York Islanders vs New Jersey Devils : Notes

It’s not quite the Barclays Center but it will do just fine.

The New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils will get acquainted with each other tonight as they play the first of two pre-season games.

The first tilt will take place on the ice of Prudential Center in Newark at 7pm with both teams official websites offering streaming video feeds. No, this game is not on television. Yes, James Dolan owns MSG and yes, Dolan lost the bid to renovate the Nassau Coliseum. Take that for what you will…..

I chose the picture you are now fuming about specifically for this post.

Not to anger the Islanders fanbase, who have no love or sympathy for the Pittsburgh Penguins superstar. In fact, after his best Greg Louganis impersonation in last seasons opening round of the NHL playoffs, he just might be hated more than any Ranger player on the Island.

Dallas Stars v New York IslandersThe New York Islanders lost both of their split-squad preseason games to the Calgary Flames last night, in what amounted to glorified scrimmages north of the border. The Isles lost 5-3 in Calgary and 4-2 in Regina, but what mattered most about the games weren’t the final scores. The fact that many of the team’s prospects were offered a taste of NHL ice time was the key component of yesterday’s games.

Brock Nelson primed for season on Islanders third line

Islanders Insight's picture

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

As Islanders nation continues what seems like the excruciatingly slow count-down towards hockey season, fans are getting a better idea of what their starting lines are going to look like.

Most of the team can be pieced together at this point as the Islanders get ready for a full squad preseason game against the Devils on Thursday, however there is one center who is not only ready to make the team, but he’s ready to make a statement; and that’s Brock Nelson.

What you see is not always what you get….

That should be the prevailing thought as the New York Islanders open up their preseason slate with split squad contests against the Calgary Flames this evening.

John Keats Helps Explain Sports and the New York Islanders

Islanders Insight's picture

IMG_0750Before the season officially begins, take a moment to organize thought and allocate emotion. Consider potentiality and compare it to reality.

Weigh this team’s determination to improve. Ask to what degree their restlessness becomes proficiency; their struggles become success.

In this world of instant gratification, with sports embodying capitalism run amuck, ponder the importance of cultivating talent. Love the process not the product, per say.

Quell your need to see a championship and rejoice in the talent that is now apparent. See this team, this entire organization, as the response to others who spend millions and do nothing.
