In his place, Coach Jack Capuano chose Marek Zidlicky over rookie Adam Pelech and the often-scratched Brian Strait, who filled in last year’s playoffs when Travis Hamonic went down with an injury last in the season. Capuano will also make gametime changes up front, according to Newsday’s Arthur Staple;
For the Panthers, Vincent Trocheck, who hasn’t played since sustaining a foot injury on March 29, participated in the morning skate, but will be a gametime decision for Head Coach Gerard Gallant. During the regular season he had 53 points (25 goals, 28 assists) in 76 regular-season games. If the Islanders are going to advance, they are going to have to have to compete even harder than they have in the first four games. “We knew it was going to be a hard-fought series,” Travis Hamonic said after the Game 4 loss. “That’s what we’re in. It’s a best-of-three now at this point. We played alright when we were in their barn, so we’re heading back there and ready to rock.” “You have to turn the page whether it’s a win or a loss,” Hamonic said. “At this point in the season, you have no time to dwell on it, so you get right back at it. We just have to keep working. We know it’s hard to win games this time of year. There are a lot of intangibles going on out there. We lose this one, but we get right back at it. We’re really confident in our group and in our team that we can get the job done.” The Islanders have lost 11 straight Game 5s since defeating Philadelphia in game 5 of the 1987 Division Finals, including last year against the Washington Capitals and the year before against the Pittsburgh Penguins. 1987 was three and a half years before Jaromir Jagr entered the NHL. Winning Game 5 is critical, at least from a historical perspective. According to Islanders statistician Eric Hornick, via the Elias Sports Bureau, teams that win Game 5 to break 2-2 series tie win the series 78.4 % of time (189-52 record).
