The Islanders woes late in the third period show up again as Sidney Crosby’s goal with 2:25 remaining propels the Penguins past New York 4-2 in the Steel City.

The Penguins would jump on New York early in the first after John Tavares took a hooking penalty just 28 seconds into the game. Patric Hornqvist would score on the ensuing power play to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead.

The Isles would come out looking much sharper in the middle frame.

The second period provided the Islanders with plenty of A-plus chances, but Marc-Andre Fleury was up to the challenge. It looked as if New York would go into the dressing room still trailing, until Travis Hamonic scored his first goal of the season after a nifty saucer pass from Shane Prince to tie the game at one.

The Islanders outshot Pittsburgh 17-7 in the period and 32-19 through the first two periods.

New York would begin the third with a 1:52 of power play time after an Evgeni Malkin holding penalty at the end of the second period. However, the Islanders would squander the man-advantage after Ryan Strome took a high-sticking penalty just 53 seconds into the third.

The Penguins would dominate the control of play in the third period. Pittsburgh recorded 12 of the first 13 shots in the period, and they regained the lead with 7:12 to go on an Evgeni Malkin goal that beat Jaroslav Halak through the five-hole. An Evgeni Malkin tripping penalty would rejuvenate the Islanders, as Shane Prince would bury the game-tying goal with 4:22 remaining.

The tie was short-lived when Pittsburgh would have Sidney Crosby slide one past Halak on the doorstep just 1:57 after the Prince goal.

Pittsburgh would add one more from Phil Kessel 32 seconds later on the power play to end New York’s hope of pulling off a comeback.

The Islanders return home to face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday.
