The "Pathetic fall of the Canadiens empire" (montrealgazette.com/stuonsports) actually began with Ron Caron's decision to ignore Mike Bossy for Mark Napier at the 1977 NHL draft. The Canadiens took Napier with the 10th overall pick, while Bossy went to the New York Islanders with the 15th pick. Caron considered Bossy a "sceneur de buts" (a garbageman) and had nothing but utter contempt for him. The francophone media always harp on Denis Savard, but forget to mention Savard was drafted third overall in 1980 by Chicago, not second, after...

Three first overall NHL draft picks. The Sedin twins, Daniel and Henrik. And don't forget Pavel Datsyuk, the consistent Detroit Red Wings forward. Datsyuk is so admired by his colleagues that many regard him as one of the game's best all-around players. Add it up and there just might be enough bona fide talent attending the NHL's All-Star festivities in Ottawa to overcome the absence of...

The 35-year-old Nabokov signed a one-year contract with Detroit last Thursday. Nabokov, who played with the San Jose Sharks for parts of 10 seasons, had spent this season with SKA St.

The Islanders weren't about to do any favors for Evgeni Nabokov, suspending the veteran goalie for refusing to report after he was claimed on waivers over the weekend.
"He hasn't reported. We picked him up off waivers and anticipated he'd be part of our team, our organization. His failure to report led to this," GM Garth Snow told Newsday. "We were excited when we made the claim and we felt he'd be a good addition to our locker room."
Snow added that he spoke with Nabokov, who had to pass through waivers after signing a one-year contract to return to the NHL (and the Detroit Red Wings) from Russia, twice on Sunday and remained optimistic the team could convince the goalie to report.
Unless the Islanders have a change of heart and put Nabokov back on waivers, he will...
