UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Evgeni Nabokov is staying away from the New York Islanders. The only question is whether that decision is permanent.

Milan Jurcina played so well after returning from a five-week absence with a hamstring injury earlier this season that the Islanders rewarded him with a one-year contract extension worth $1.6 million for 2011-12.

But the hulking defenseman is back on the shelf with an upper-body injury suffered Jan. 17 against New Jersey. Jurcina will miss 2-to-4 weeks, joining regular defensemen Mark Streit, who hasn't played this season following shoulder surgeries, and Mike Mottau and Mark Eaton, who are both done for the year following hip operations, on the injured list.

"Any time you have veterans in your lineup, that helps the team," interim coach Jack Capuano said. "Defense and goaltending are really crucial positions, why good teams always build from net out.

New York Islanders backup goalie Nathan Lawson was replaced after injuring his left knee in the first period Friday night against the Buffalo Sabres. Lawson hurt himself when he steered toward a goal post while reaching out to grab a jam-in attempt by Buffalo's Jochen Hecht. The play occurred with 3:01 left, and Lawson remained in the game after a trainer attended to him.
